Our Lady is shown with St. Bernadette.
On February 11, 1858, in unbelieving and materialistic times, the Immaculate Virgin first appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. Through this humble girl, Mary called sinners to conversion. Lourdes has had a powerful influence upon the world and the shrine built there has been the scene of many healings – both physical and spiritual. Mary is depicted in the window as described by Bernadette, wearing a white dress, having a rose on each foot, and holding a rosary.
OUR LADY IS SHOWN WITH ST. CATHERINE LABOURE.
During the year 1830, an apparition of Mary appeared three times before Catherine Laboure, who was then a novice with the order of the daughters of Charity in Paris, France. During the vision, Mary modeled a design of a medal, which she asked Catherine to have struck and distributed. She said that those who would wear it around their neck would receive great graces. Mary said that the rays extending from her hands on the medal (and on the representation in the stained-glass window) symbolized the graces that she would grant if she were asked for them. In the years following the introduction of the medal, many blessings were showered upon those who wore it, and it became known as “Miraculous”. This led to the rapid spread of the devotion. Though neither magic nor a good-luck charm, the Medal is a testimony to faith and to the power of prayer. The medal is still available through The Association of the Miraculous Medal in Missouri. Devotions to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal are held at Holy Trinity every Monday evening.
OUR LADY SPOKE TO THREE CHILDREN
On May 13, 1917, Mary reportedly appeared to three children near Fatima in Portugal while they were tending their sheep. The young shepherds said a woman, dressed in a white gown and veil, told them to come there on the 13th day of each month until the following October. On that day, the woman said that she was the Lady of the Rosary and told the children to recite the rosary every day. The Catholic Church erected a shrine with a basilica at the site and, in 1932, authorized devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. Since then, thousands of persons have made pilgrimages to that place. Thousands have been relieved of their illnesses.
The north wall of the church nave is a shimmering vision of power and light emanating from on high. Near the top is a stained-glass window revealing a lamb standing on a book, which is radiating toward the earth at the bottom of the window. This represents Christ, the Lamb of God, who came as God’s presence on earth and is known by us through the book, or bible. Below the window is Christ’s crucifixion on the cross, which reminds us, through Christ’s suffering, of God’s love for us.
