As we experience again the weeks of Advent and the Christmas rush I’m inclined to find a way to make a difference this year.
We see the signs of the season around us in the church environment as we begin the ritual of blessing of the Advent Wreath and the lighting of the first week’s candle. How does it make me feel? Panicked because Christmas is near, or introspective because the significance of Christ’s birth makes me realize what a great gift he is to me.
The music is also different from the music of Ordinary Time. We’re singing songs that support the themes of Advent. “Await the Lord with hope, Christ be our light.” There’s no “Glory to God” now, instead we are singing “Kyrie eleison, Lord have mercy.” The Scripture readings speak about being vigilant, about preparing the way of the Lord, and that the one mightier than John the Baptist is coming.
How will I be vigilant? How can I prepare a way for Jesus in my heart this year?
This Advent I’ll engage in the Mass wholeheartedly, singing with a full voice, listening actively and responding confidently. I’ll be vigilant about defending those who have no voice. I’ll think beyond my family and friends and make a point of supporting the needy over the holidays and beyond into next year. I’ll find time to reflect and get away from the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations. I’ll pray for peace in the world and try in anyway that comes to mind to make a difference in the world.
