Pope hearing confession

The Bishops of California are urging Catholics to oppose SB 360, a California bill that seeks to force priests to disclose information heard in the sacrament of confession. We know that can never happen. Priests will never disclose what they hear in confession.

We are asking all Catholics to tell your state Assembly member that we oppose the government interfering in our right to practice our faith. You are asked to sign a letter opposing SB360 unless it is amended.

The Bishops of California are urging the Catholic Community to oppose Senate Bill 360.   A vote in the State Senate is expected this week.
SB 360, a bill in the CA Senate, seeks to increase protections of children from abuse and neglect.   We agree that keeping children safe is vitally important.  However, this bill claims it must change our sacrament to do so!  This is a violation of our First Amendment right to practice our religion free from government interference.   Since 2002, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has trained over 300,000 lay leaders in abuse prevention and reporting.   There are mandated reporters present at every parish, school and hospital.  We have updated buildings and policies to put the protection of children first.   We do not need to change the Sacrament of Confession in order to advance our shared goal of fighting child sexual abuse in our society.
In the Sacrament of Confession, we receive absolution for sins and the grace of God to sin no more.  Confession strengthens our relationship with Jesus and provides therapeutic benefits to the community as people seek to live better lives.   We need your help to tell legislators that they cannot change the way we practice our faith!   As Catholics we must call our State Senators and urge them to oppose this bill.

Senate Bill 360 seeks to remove the privacy right to confession for priests and the thousands of lay people who work for the Catholic Church in California.  The legislature cannot change our sacraments!

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO DO TWO IMPORTANT STEPS:

  1. Send an email to your CA Senator to be sure he or she understands that we can protect children while also protecting our faith!
  2. Call your CA Senator today to tell him or her that you OPPOSE SB 360.
